Cedar-LNG

Cedar LNG

Cedar LNG, a proposed floating liquefied natural gas facility in Kitimat, B.C., represents the world’s first Indigenous majority-owned LNG project. Upon its completion, the Haisla Nation and the surrounding region will benefit from one of the cleanest environmental profiles globally. The facility will utilise natural gas, primarily used across British Columbia for heating homes and businesses. An estimated eight-kilometre-long pipeline will connect Cedar LNG to the Coastal GasLink pipeline.

Chief Crystal Smith, Chief Councillor of the Haisla Nation, shares in-depth insights about Cedar LNG on the podcast, offering valuable perspectives on the project’s impact and future.  Be sure to revisit these episodes:

Challenges

The combined effects of air emissions are a significant concern for Indigenous nations and the local community, and they expect Cedar LNG to address these issues proactively. Another critical aspect that requires thorough review is the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, both from the LNG facility itself and the source of natural gas. Safety protocols are also under scrutiny, as operating a floating LNG facility carries inherent risks. Whether it's potential facility failures, spills, or other worst-case scenarios, Cedar LNG must take decisive steps to address the social and environmental challenges head-on.

Impact

Cedar LNG is set to generate up to 500 jobs during its 4-year construction period, providing significant employment opportunities. Additionally, the project will offer long-term stability with up to 100 secure, family-supporting jobs during its operational phase. With Haisla-led joint ventures and other Indigenous businesses already in progress, this project is poised to drive substantial economic growth, promoting prosperity for the community and beyond.

Resolution

Cedar LNG’s innovative facility is built with a focus on maintaining a low emissions profile. Managing air emissions is a top priority for Cedar LNG, and the facility is designed to utilise clean energy, incorporate advanced emissions control technology, and ensure rigorous monitoring. In terms of GHG emissions, Cedar LNG is committed to continuous reduction efforts, aligning with key legislative policies to minimise their environmental impact. Safety remains paramount, and the design philosophy of Cedar LNG adheres strictly to industry-leading standards, ensuring a secure and responsible operation.
