Challenges

Before the project commences, Hydro One must thoroughly assess various factors to ensure smooth execution. Key aspects to evaluate include environmental, socio-economic, and technical considerations. The planning process necessitates extensive research to determine the potential environmental impacts of such projects. During the initial planning phase, critical elements for discussion will include engaging with Indigenous communities and addressing their concerns. This comprehensive assessment and inclusive approach are essential for the project's success and sustainability.

Impact

While the ultimate goal of the Transmission System project is to make sure people in Ontario have access to power, it is also intended for empowering communities and businesses. The growth of these communities would mean providing power for supporting new jobs, industries and homes. It is not only access to sufficient power that this project will generate but also access to clean and reliable energy.  

It is estimated that there will be 5,000 highly-skilled jobs that will be available during the construction and maintenance work. Investing in infrastructure empowers local communities. 

Resolution

Hydro One's commitment to delivering sufficient power to Ontario residents involves meticulous load forecasting. Recognising the importance of environmental assessment in advancing this electricity infrastructure project, Hydro One will invest in new facilities to accommodate growth and development. Comprehensive technical assessments will ensure that all practices and approaches meet industry criteria and standards.  

Once viable transmission solutions are identified, Hydro One will collaborate closely with stakeholders and rights-holders, incorporating their input to guide the project's pace. Approvals will be sought from the Canada Energy Regulator (CER), Ontario Energy Board (OEB), Class Environmental Assessment for Minor Transmission Facilities, and Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). This thorough and inclusive approach gives importance to Hydro One's dedication to sustainable and efficient energy delivery.
